Gwen Gravlee Scruggs passed away peacefully at her home on October 10, 2016. Gwen was born on January 5, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a graduate of Shades Valley High School and Auburn University. While her children were going through the Mountain Brook Schools, she was very active in the PTA. Gwen was a member of several organizations including garden clubs, bridge clubs, Arlington Historical Association and Birmingham Country Club. Growing up, Gwen was a member of the Southside Baptist Church, where she was married. Her childhood home was in the shadows of Canterbury...

Gwen Gravlee Scruggs passed away peacefully at her home on October 10, 2016. Gwen was born on January 5, 1935, in Birmingham, Alabama. She was a graduate of Shades Valley High School and Auburn University. While her children were going through the Mountain Brook Schools, she was very active in the PTA. Gwen was a member of several organizations including garden clubs, bridge clubs, Arlington Historical Association and Birmingham Country Club. Growing up, Gwen was a member of the Southside Baptist Church, where she was married. Her childhood home was in the shadows of Canterbury United Methodist Church where, in her adult life, she was a member. She was very creative, with impressive crafting skills in sewing, knitting, crochet and cross-stitch. Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Levert G. and Frances Montgomery Gravlee. She is survived by her loving husband of 57 years, Dr. B. Q. Scruggs, Jr.; her children, Susie Hendry, Lee Scruggs and Sharon Cox (Steve); her sister, Gayle Gravlee Magruder; her sister-in-law, Betty Scruggs Gunn; grandchildren: Gabriel Hendry, Annamaria Hendry, Seraphina Hendry, Samantha Scruggs, Skyler Scruggs, Alex Scruggs, Lane Jacobs, Rory Jacobs, Brian Cox (Nikki) and Laura Cox; and 2 great grandchildren: Landry Cox and Beau Cox; and a wonderful group of lifelong, local friends. The family appreciates the loving care of Teresa Richardson who was Gwen's caregiver for over 10 years. In addition, heartfelt thanks to Mary Thomas, Laquita Thomas and Latirra Payne for their in home support. The family also wants to thank Emily Lawler and Comfort Care Hospice for their assistance. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM on Friday, October 14, at Canterbury United Methodist Church, 350 Overbook Road, Mountain Brook, followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00 AM. Inurnment with the immediate family will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to American Cancer Society , the Alzheimer's Association or a charity of your choice
