Knoxye Johnson North, age 81, died peacefully on August 7, 2017, surrounded by her family. Knoxye was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 14, 1935. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Birmingham. She graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1953 (class valedictorian), and the University of Alabama in 1957. Knoxye Johnson North, age 81, died peacefully on August 7, 2017, surrounded by her family. Knoxye was born in Birmingham, Alabama on October 14, 1935. She was a lifelong member of First United Methodist Church of Birmingham. She graduated from Shades Valley High School in 1953 (class valedictorian), and the University of Alabama in 1957. Knoxye was a member, and served as president, of Kappa Delta Sorority. During her years at the University of Alabama, she received many honors including Mortar Board, ODK, Phi Beta Kappa, and others. Knoxye received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award, the highest honor offered by the University, to recognize excellence of character and service to humanity. Her father, Eugene H. Johnson, had also received this award. Knoxye also received an award for maintaining the highest scholastic average among women students at the University for 4 years. As an adult, Knoxye was active in her church and in many organizations and clubs. Despite her accomplishments, Knoxye will be most remembered as a loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Her greatest joys were family and friends.

Knoxye was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Harris Johnson and Knoxie Faulk Johnson. She is survived by her son, John Pelham North, III (Lynn) and her daughter, Knoxye Elizabeth North Grinstead "Betsy", and her 3 grandchildren, John Pelham North IV, Nancy Hardage North and Knoxye Elizabeth Grinstead. She is also survived by her brother, Eugene Harris Johnson, Jr. and her sister, Betty Johnson Allen (Dick); her niece, Wynne Allen Callaway (Matt), nephew, James Michael Allen (Katherine), niece, Jeanne Allen Perkins (Scott) and nephew, Eugene Michael Johnson; other relatives and many lifelong, loving friends. The family sincerely appreciates Angela Moore for her loving care of Knoxye for the past two and a half years.

Visitation with family will begin at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 9, at Ridout's Valley Chapel in Homewood, followed by a Memorial Service at 4:00 pm. A private burial service will be held at Elmwood Cemetery in the morning. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Birmingham Living Church Fund, 518 19th St N, Birmingham, AL 35203; the Fair Haven Retirement Fountain of Love Fund, 1424 Montclair Rd, Birmingham, AL 35210; or to a charity of your choice.
