Mary Thomas-Brewer died on June 13, 2017. She would have been 56 on her birthday June 27.
Mary is survived by her husband of 17 years, Robert P. Brewer; sisters Louise Thomas Burke of Marietta, GA (Dennis) and Judith Rebecca Thomas of Birmingham; and nephew Daniel Burke and niece Kelli Burke, both of Marietta, GA. She was preceded in death by her parents John R. Thomas, Jr. and Judith A. Akin.
Her career included over 12 years with Vulcan Materials, and at the time of her death she was a Product Manager in Corporate Procurement. She would don her hard hat and meet with colleagues in the quarries as easily and effectively as she met with upper management. She enjoyed trips in the field to see excavators and haul trucks in operation and to discuss maintenance with suppliers. In 2014 she represented Vulcan as "Voice of The Customer" at the Castrol Annual Distributor Meeting and was a member of the Institute of Supply Management. Prior to her employment at Vulcan she was a Financial Analyst at SONAT and at Protective Life.
Mary earned an MBA from the University of Alabama, a BA in accounting from UAB and a BS in psychology from Berry College in Rome, Georgia.
Mary attended St. Luke's Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Daughters of The King. She was selected by Vulcan to participate in the Momentum Women's Leadership Program in 2013-2014. Her volunteer work included The Service Guild of Birmingham (Treasurer), YWCA of Birmingham Junior Board (Treasurer) and The Jefferson Society (benefitting the restoration of The Alabama Theater).

She enjoyed travel, outdoor adventures and she ran multiple half marathons.

A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 16 at 3:00pm at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 3736 Montrose Road, Mountain Brook, AL. Visitation to follow in the Founders Room. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to St. Luke's Episcopal Church or St. Vincent's Bruno Cancer Center.
